I'm coming late to watching Enterprise.

The opening sequence is an interesting montage of pioneering
transportation devices. I recognize all of them except a couple. Is
there some particular significance to the lifting body shuttle that we
see separating from the space station? And after seeing Cochrane's
warp engine unfold itself from its booster stage, we see a rear view
of some ship with both warp nacelles and shitloads of reaction
engines.

I'm willing to accept the lifting body shuttle as representing a
generic ship between now and Cochrane's time. But the camera lingers
on the post-Cochrane ship as if I should recognize it.

For what is worth, this is a page of my Trek site about the opening sequence of
Enterprise: http://www.hypertrek.info/index.php/entsigla

Unfortunatey the texts are in Italian because the site is in Italian, but if you
find the picture you are referring to, either you can use google translator or
ask me.

The startrek.com site has a page containing links to the timeline in
the opening sequence:

http://www.startrek.com/startrek/view/features/documentaries/article/3686.html

The accompanying text calls it a "warp capable starship" and
explains:

"After Phoenix, subsequent starships attained higher warp speeds and
extended man's reach even further into our galaxy.

"This ship, flying over an Earth colony, represents humanity's
continuing expansion beyond our home planet."

FWIW I also keep thinking I ought to recognize it, though I don't.

My hypothesis --- and it's not encumbered by any particular
information --- is that that ship was one of the drafts for what became
NX-01, possibly dropped only late in the game. This would explain its
similarity to the Enterprise-as-we-begrudingly-came-to-accept-it and why
they'd have a relatively long, careful shot showing it as it swings past
the planetary body there on hand.

Inside the show, they keep talking about Daddy Archer's (Henry? I can
never remember names) ship that never got built because of Vulcan
skepticism about Earth capabilities. Your theory sounds like THAT
ship.

But a draft idea of a ship counters the spirit of all the other real
(from the viewpoint of Enterprise's time) ships.

Thanks. The X-33 was the other ship I asked about. Your pictures
don't come across when I ask Google Translate to render the page -- I
have to view the English side-by-side with the Italian to get the
whole impact. It took me a few minutes to realize that the word
google translate renders as "carrier" should more likely be "booster".

Hmmm. I later noticed that google toolbar was offering to translate
the site for me after I went to it in Italian. This time the pictures
remained intact.

Luigi's site cross-references the mystery ship with one seen in the
episode "The Expanse" which I haven't viewed yet.

It's not exact, but close enough. The battle sequence seemed to
include one NX ship and two of this other design. One of the three
was called "Intrepid".

I don't really know my way around Memory Alpha or the other fansites.
Is there a write-up somewhere about what ships were used in the
"boomer" era? Memory Alpha seems a bit ragged about Intrepids in the
Enterprise era.

Another NX? I'm a bit confused about the timescale. Is Columbia
lauched during the Enterprise time period between the shows I've
watched chronologically and the end of season two?

Oh! I'm sorry. I meant that as a real-world perspective thing,
that is, that the team making the show had the Mystery Ship in mind as a
possible design for NX-01, but went for something a little more Warmed
Over Reliant after seeing how it looked on-screen. And then didn't throw
away the completed animation because the budget is never loose enough to
allow that sort of extravagance.

The only pre-NX-01 Star Fleet ships I remember from _Enterprise_
(besides its prototypes) came about from ``The Expanse'' and I think they
looked more like flying trowels than the Mystery Ship. Perhaps Mystery
was an earlier (first-to-warp-three?) ship, but it still seems to have an
elusive place.

I've heard some mention of it as a ``moon shuttle'', although now
that I've said that I don't remember from where.
